Medical Secretary

  • Hours: 24 per week
  • Pattern: Thursday 08:30 – 16:30, Friday 08:30 – 16:30 + 1 additional day on either Monday or Wednesday 08:30 – 16:30
  • Salary: £13.00 - £14.25 per hour, dependent on experience
  • Closing date: Sunday 7th June 2026

We are seeking an organised, professional and proactive Medical Secretary to join our friendly and welcoming team at Burdwood Surgery.

The successful candidate will provide high-quality administrative and secretarial support to our clinicians, ensuring patients receive an efficient and confidential service.

In this role, you will create and chase up referrals, deal with telephone enquiries and prepare & produce document templates, such as hospital referrals. You will also be responsible for the paperwork relating to shotgun licenses and our death protocol.

The ideal candidate will need to be confident, methodical and efficient with excellent verbal and written communication skills. The successful candidate must be able to work on their own initiative and have good time management skills.

Previous secretarial experience is essential. Previous experience in a healthcare role and knowledge of medical terminology would be beneficial.

Full training will be given to the successful candidate.

This role is office-based within a GP practice with frequent use of computers and telephones.

The role includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Provide secretarial and administrative support to our clinicians and non-clinical staff as required. This includes the typing of letters, reports, patient referrals, memorandums, etc. in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Process referrals using NHS electronic referral systems where appropriate.
  • Monitor and manage tasks/workflows allocated by GPs or management.
  • Manage incoming and outgoing correspondence, including emails accurately and within agreed timescales.
  • Handle telephone calls and patient enquiries in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Liaise with hospitals, community services, and external healthcare providers regarding appointments, referrals, and patient information.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and ensure information is updated correctly.
  • Communicate effectively with clinicians, patients, and other members of the practice team.

Healthcare Assistant (HCA)

  • Hours: 29.5 per week
  • Pattern:  Monday 08:30 - 17:00, Tuesday 08:30 - 17:00, Wednesday 08:30 - 17:00, Thursday 13:00 - 17:00.=
  • Salary: £13.75 - £14.10 per hour, dependent on experience
  • Closing date: Sunday 7th June 2026

We are seeking a caring and enthusiastic Healthcare Assistant (HCA) to join our friendly Practice team of healthcare professionals. In this role, you will assist our clinicians in the care of our patients, including treatment, preventative care, screening and patient education. You will work under the direct supervision of the Lead Practice Nurse and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols. The post will also include some administrative duties.

The ideal candidate will need to be friendly, confident, methodical and efficient with excellent communication skills, a strong sense of empathy and resilience. The successful candidate must be able to work on their own initiative and have good time management skills.

  • Basic Healthcare Assistant training is essential, including venepuncture, taking observations and ECG taking.
  • Experience working in a GP Surgery would be beneficial. Training will be given to the successful candidate.

The role includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Perform venepuncture for patients and phlebotomy clinics.
  • Undertake baseline observations - BP / Pulse / Temperature as required on templates and assist with long term condition monitoring.
  • Organise/fit equipment for 24-hour BP & ECG recording for patients.
  • Undertake basic wound care / dressings and to refer patients to trained nursing colleagues where necessary for review.
  • Perform B12 / Flu / Pneumonia / Shingles injections this list is not exhaustive, working to PSD and under the instruction of trained nursing colleagues.
  • Assist in seasonal and special projects as required e.g. flu and pneumonia campaigns.
  • Ensure that specimens brought in by patients, or taken by doctors or nurses, are tested, and recorded appropriately, or ready for collection by pathology service.
  • Assist in the assessment, surveillance, promotion and collection of data of patients health and well-being.
  • Chaperoning duties.
  • Ensure clinical areas, couches, fridges and work environments are kept clean.
