Our Practice
The surgery was purpose built in 1987. We are a PMS practice with four full time partners and three salaried doctors. As a training practice we also have GP registrars. The practice is urban, looking after the south eastern part of Thatcham. Our population of approximately 9,800 is relatively young, but there will be abundant opportunity to experience care of the elderly and as our population expands, it's becoming more diverse.
The partners are Dr Peter Robertson, Dr Paul Harris, Dr Michael Morgan and
Dr Bal Bahia. We have 8 consulting rooms, 3 treatment rooms, common room, library and meeting room facilities.
We have a practice manager and a full compliment of staff including 4 practice nurses, 2 healthcare assistants, receptionists, secretaries and administrative staff. We have an attached midwife who works from the premises. Occasionally we have a midwifery student attached. Health Visitors continue to monitor children under school age but no longer run clinics from our premises, instead their clinics are now drop-in sessions, held at South and North Thatcham Childrens Centres. We have monthly primary health care team meetings and monthly clinical meetings with our practice nurses. The registrar is encouraged to attend all our meetings and participate.
We are fully computerised using the Vision system. We are a paper-light practice and have regular computer training to be at the forefront of IT in primary care. We have desktop access to the NHS net throughout the building.
The practice provides care for a girls public school, Downe House. Apart from the interest in school medicine, one of our partners has an interest in sports medicine and another is the prescribing lead for the Newbury and Community PCT.
We are equidistant from Oxford, Reading and Basingstoke Hospitals.
Out of hours care is provided through Westcall, a local co-operative based in Wokingham.
Registrars are members of the vocational training scheme at Reading. They attend a full day release at the post graduate centre at the Royal Berks Hospital in Reading.
The registrar has a half day protected tutorial each week, following a learner centered curriculum, aiming to provide a foundation for independent practice in the future.
